The raising environmental awareness in Ethiopia

Some youths who are sitting idle and ridiculed us. We are all graduated from university. We don’t care about their insults; rather we keep on doing our jobs.” Adissu, plastic collector

Out of the 8.3 billion tons of plastic produced since 1950, only 9% was recycled. Every year at least 8 million tons end up in the sea. How to reverse the course of this announced disaster? Message from a bottle tells the simple yet innovative experience of recycling PET in the Ethiopian city of Hawassa. A chain of positive reactions that can infect an entire continent.

The project 100%Plastic by the NGO Cifa aimed at creating social-economic opportunities, arising from the recycling of plastics, for vulnerable categories (400 plastic collectors, 80% of them are women). The focus also on the environmental protection to allow every child to grow in a clean and healthy world, with interactive workshops involving approximately 42,000 children from primary and secondary schools. Cifa contrasting environmental pollution by strengthening sustainable economic practices such as recycling of plastic materials and awareness raising. Approximately 350,000 Hawassa residents benefit from better management of SW (solid waste) in terms of urban decorum and environmental benefits.
